Pondicherry’s excellent formal education opportunities are availed by students from all over the country, who can enjoy the city’s multicultural environment, rich heritage and modern facilities while they study.

There are nine medical colleges in Pondicherry, the highest of any southern Indian city. This count includes JIPMER (Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research), which offers undergraduate, postgraduate and speciality medical training as well as a nursing college. The city is also home to the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Veterinary Education and Research.

Run by the central government, Pondicherry University has programmes in sciences, social sciences, humanities, performing arts, communications, education and management. It also runs a ‘Study India Programme’ for foreign students. Pondicherry Engineering College is also affiliated with the University, and is one of the several engineering colleges in the city.

Bharatiar Palkalaikoodam offers undergraduate degrees in visual arts and performing arts, with the latter focused on Bharatnatyam and Carnatic music.

The oldest French school outside France, the Lycée français de Pondichéry gives students access to a unique multilingual, multicultural educational opportunity.

Pondicherry also offers many opportunities for informal learning, such as language, pottery, dance and martial arts classes.
